How long does a robot dog's battery last?
The claimed battery life of a consumer robot dog is about 1–2 hours per charge, depending on use. Models with a larger battery or professional models reach 2–4 hours. It is one of the most important limits to know before buying, because it affects the experience a lot: for long sessions (events, filming, work) you almost always need a spare battery. The battery life claimed by manufacturers refers to ideal conditions (light walking, flat ground). Under load — running, jumping, climbing, carrying — consumption rises and runtime drops.
What runtime depends on
- Intensity of use: walking consumes little; running, jumping and climbing slopes consume much more.
- Load carried: more weight, less runtime.
- Terrain: uneven surfaces and climbs strain the motors.
- Active sensors: LiDAR, cameras and AI computation draw power.
- Battery age: as with smartphones, capacity drops after many cycles.
How to extend battery life
- Spare battery: the simplest solution. On the Go2, G1, R1 and Rover X1 the battery slides out and is swapped in a few seconds, with the robot switched off: no model in the catalogue supports hot-swapping. With two packs in rotation you never stop. Prices (verified on 17 September 2026): Go2 8,000 mAh battery €460 on the Unitree store ($500), €600 including VAT from European dealers; the 15,000 mAh €644–840; G1 €644–900; R1 €460–600; Rover X1 €275 (4,000 mAh) or €459 (8,000 mAh). On the Xiaomi CyberDog 2 and KEYi Loona the battery is internal and goes through service.
- Use the right mode: avoid running and acrobatics when they aren't needed.
- Keep the battery healthy: don't leave it flat for long, avoid extreme temperatures, follow the manufacturer's charging guidance (the Go2 battery, for example, self-discharges to 65% after 10 days idle: that is a protection, not a fault).
How long does it take to charge?
For the Go2 the Unitree manual states 2 hours with the standard charger for the 8,000 mAh battery (4 hours for the 15,000 mAh) and 0.8 / 1.5 hours with the fast charger; the battery has to be removed from the robot to charge. The CyberDog 2 charges in about 90 minutes. This is why intensive users work with several batteries in rotation.
Should battery life put you off buying?
For home and recreational use, 1–2 hours are generally more than enough: you rarely use the robot continuously. For events, long shoots or work, however, budget straight away for at least one spare battery: it is by far the most useful accessory.
