Is it worth it? Yes, if you want the most complete and best-supported robot dog on the market without spending a fortune. The Unitree Go2 is the most widespread quadruped in the world (Unitree's IPO prospectus claims over 60% of the quadrupeds sold worldwide), and with a price starting at about €1,470 (Air version, $1,600) it offers capabilities that in 2020 cost tens of thousands of euros (Boston Dynamics Spot: $74,500 at launch). It isn't perfect — battery life is limited and it doesn't climb stairs like a Spot — but for value for money it has no rivals. Here is our honest test.

What the Unitree Go2 is
It is a quadruped robot dog made by China's Unitree, launched in mid-2023 and updated through 2026. It weighs about 15 kg, is 70 cm long and 40 cm tall, and moves thanks to 12 motors that let it walk, run at up to 2.5 m/s (Air), 3.5 m/s (Pro) or 3.7 m/s (X and EDU), jump, dance and keep its balance on difficult ground. The technological heart is the 360° 4D LiDAR, which lets it "see" its surroundings, avoid obstacles and build maps to move autonomously.

For most people the Pro is the best choice: the price difference over the Air is repaid by the voice commands, the 4G and the AI integration, which make the experience much more "alive", plus a 12-month warranty instead of 6. The X is the most capable Go2 you can buy without a quote; the EDU only makes sense if you actually program (Unitree does not publish its list price: in Europe from about €7,800 incl. VAT, in the USA from $11,190).
What it can do (the test)
Switched on and connected to the app, the Go2 impresses immediately: it walks smoothly, follows routes, avoids furniture and people, shakes paws, does handstands, dances and — in the Pro version — answers when you talk to it, holding a conversation thanks to the AI. LiDAR mapping works well indoors too, with obstacle detection from as little as 5 cm away.
On uneven ground, gravel and gentle slopes it copes very well. The limit shows up on actual staircases, where performance drops: it is a robot designed more for surfaces and low steps than for climbing whole floors.

Budgeting for the real landed cost is essential to avoid surprises.
