Buying a humanoid robot for work: 7 checks before signing

A practical procurement checklist covering task reliability, teleoperation, worker safety, integrations and total cost.

Humanoid demonstrations are common in 2026, but a convincing clip does not prove deployment readiness. Recent announcements from Mitsubishi Electric, Agility Robotics and NVIDIA highlight why integration and validation matter alongside hardware. Use this checklist before ordering or running a pilot.

1. Define the job

Specify object weights, travel distance, workspace, shift length and acceptance criteria. Ask for consecutive unassisted completions rather than a highlights reel.

2. Identify human assistance

Clarify whether movements are teleoperated, steps need approval or a remote operator rescues failures. Human intervention changes real productivity and costs.

3. Request safety evidence

Obtain site-specific risk assessments, stopping tests, operating distances and required local compliance documents. A safety partnership is not the same as an independent certification.

4. Assess integration

Check interfaces to CNC equipment, business software, networks, authentication and update management. Mitsubishi's example shows machine coordination is a design challenge, not a universal built-in feature.

5. Calculate total ownership cost

Include training, software, spares, batteries, downtime and local support. Request written service response times and responsibilities.

6. Run a controlled pilot

Use a reversible trial with human oversight, clear stop conditions and an existing-process baseline. Track throughput, errors, uptime and interventions.

7. Check actual availability

Digit 5, for example, targets early access in 2027. A roadmap is not proof of units available for delivery. Confirm dates and contract terms before payment.

Manufacturer claims are distinct from independent testing. Explore the robot catalog and guides.
