Humanoid robot football in Rome: HULKs meet whIRLwind in the final

HULKs and whIRLwind met in the Middle Division final at Maker Faire Rome. The documented event, the original footage and what a match cannot prove.

On 25 October, humanoid robots faced each other in the Middle Division final of the Italian RoboCup Humanoid Open at Maker Faire Rome. Footage produced by Anadolu Agency identifies the teams as HULKs, associated with Hamburg University of Technology, and whIRLwind Amsterdam. The organiser's rules place the tournament at Rome's Gazometro Ostiense and ISA sites from 23 to 25 October, with finals on the last day. These are different kinds of evidence: the programme establishes the setting, while Anadolu's attributed footage documents that particular final.

What the match shows

A match matters because it gives robots a less controlled environment than a choreographed routine. The ball and opponents change position, balance is tested, and team software must make choices during play. Maker Faire describes this as a humanoid football competition, not a test of domestic assistants. The exact make and version of each machine visible in the recording have not been confirmed; we do not assign them to a catalogue model.

Nor does the recording establish a winner or a task-success rate. RoboCup rules describe the competition. A buyer needs different evidence: documentation for the precise robot edition, real availability, delivered price, support and a demonstration of the desired use. Chasing a ball does not establish that a robot can tidy a home or protect people.

Coverage spread beyond Italy, but appearances on several sites are not a historical view count or proof of “virality”. Some footage is distributed under media licences. ROBOLERO shows the original public video in the official YouTube player without downloading or republishing it. Attribution is important: Anadolu produced it; Reuters Connect hosts it for customers and explicitly says Reuters did not independently verify or endorse the material.

What buyers should check

For private buyers, the practical lesson is to choose for a task and an exact edition, not for one impressive clip. A development humanoid needs software, clear space, supervision, spares and support. Compare robots actually offered in ROBOLERO's catalogue and ask the seller to demonstrate the function you need under the conditions in which you will use it. The Rome tournament shows active research; it cannot replace that purchase check.
