Unitree G1 joint calibration: when it helps and when to stop
G1 calibration is not scheduled maintenance. Identify the 23 or 29 DoF configuration, check symptoms, and ask for support before changing joint references.
The Calibration command in Unitree Explore looks like an ordinary maintenance item. For a G1 owner it should be considered only when there is a real fault. Unitree's manual says the robot leaves the factory calibrated and should not have its joints recalibrated during normal use. Check the controller, ground, battery and configuration before treating a fall as a joint-reference problem. An unnecessary calibration can change a working robot's settings.
This analysis covers the G1 in ROBOLERO's catalogue and documented G1 EDU configurations. They do not all have the same mechanics. Unitree's Explore page offers separate tutorials for 23 and 29 degrees of freedom. The embedded RoboStore video explicitly concerns a 23-DoF G1. It is an archived retailer demonstration, not a Unitree instruction for every EDU variant or a ROBOLERO hands-on test.
A symptom is not a diagnosis
A single slip on a smooth floor, a misunderstood remote command or an obstacle does not establish a calibration fault. The Unitree manual calls for a clear, suitable surface, sound components, battery checks and knowledge of emergency stopping. Stop movement and document the alarm, operating mode, floor and circumstances before changing offsets or firmware. We cannot diagnose your unit remotely.
| What happened | First reasonable check | Calibration decision |
|---|---|---|
| Slip on a smooth or soft surface | Move to a suitable flat surface and slow down | Do not infer calibration from one slip |
| Repeated falls or inability to stand | Secure the area; record alarms and the documented restart | Ask support whether calibration is indicated |
| Consistent drift | Check controls, ground and available compensation | Do not start joint calibration automatically |
| Serious impact or replacement part | Inspect without forcing joints or cables | Have the supplier assess the exact variant |
The independent New Uzbekistan University engineering guide rejects calendar-based calibration and recommends agreeing the work with the supplier. Its context does not prove identical software on every private G1. Abra Robotics' variant guide also illustrates how many configurations share the G1 name. Match the invoice, SKU, seller documentation and robot status to the actual unit. A 23-DoF video cannot establish a procedure for a 29-DoF model or every EDU option.
Assisted calibration and a repair quote
Unitree says its app can recalibrate motor joints and IMU; it describes joint-angle fine-tuning separately. These are different controls. Before changing either, ask what fault was confirmed, which procedure matches your unit, what supports and tools are needed, how the robot will be kept stable and how the result will be checked. A generic firmware upgrade is no substitute for diagnosis.
A useful service quote should identify the diagnosis, variant, work, replacement parts, shipping, timing and what happens if the fault persists. There is no reliable universal calibration price here: the total depends on the case and service country. Ask whether the work affects the warranty and what evidence the seller needs, without sending credentials or footage of other people. Before buying, establish who will maintain the robot locally. Compare the G1 profile and first-session guide. Document the symptom first; calibrate only when Unitree or a competent technician confirms the need for your configuration.
