Robot dog warranty, service and spare parts: the guide

The manufacturer's warranty on a robot dog lasts from 6 months (Unitree Go2 Air) to 2 years (Dobot Rover X1 sold in the EU); on the most widespread models, the Unitree Go2 Pro, X and EDU, it is 12 months. On top of this comes the 24-month legal warranty of the Italian Consumer Code, but only if you buy from a professional seller based in the European Union: if you import on your own from the Chinese store you have only the manufacturer's warranty, with shipping to China at your own expense. In Italy the only authorised Unitree centre is Eagle Robots (Perugia); the spare part everyone needs sooner or later, the battery, costs $500 (about €460) on the Unitree store and €600 incl. VAT from a European reseller.

How long the manufacturer's warranty lasts

What it excludes. Unitree's terms exclude "unauthorized modification, unauthorized disassembly, and shell opening", the use of non-original batteries and accessories, falls, crushing, immersion and traces of water inside. Boston Dynamics does the same: altering, opening or disassembling the robot, or repairing it without authorisation, voids the warranty (terms of sale, points 5.2.3 and 5.2.4). Petoi excludes "unauthorized modification, disassembly, or shell opening" outside the official instructions. In practice: the warranty covers factory defects, not falls down the stairs or a robot opened up in the garage.

Who pays for shipping. For Unitree the rule is written down: "you need to bear the postage cost first"; if the defect is recognised, testing, parts, labour and the return courier are on Unitree, otherwise you pay for the repair or the robot comes back as it was. From an EU reseller, the reseller handles the logistics.

24-month legal warranty: only if you buy from an EU seller

The Italian Consumer Code (Legislative Decree 206/2005, art. 133) makes the seller liable for conformity defects that appear within two years of delivery; on used goods the parties may shorten the term, but not below one year. In the first year the defect is presumed to have been present at delivery (art. 130): it is up to the seller to prove otherwise. Action must be brought within 26 months of delivery. Three practical consequences:

• It applies only between a professional seller and a consumer. Eagle Robots (Italy), Generation Robots (France), Botland (Poland) and INFFNI with its European warehouse are EU sellers: the legal warranty applies, and for distance purchases you also have the 14-day right of withdrawal.
• With direct import there is none. If you buy on shop.unitree.com or from a Hong Kong shop, the seller is outside the Union: on paper the legal warranty exists, in practice you have no one to enforce it against. Only the manufacturer's warranty remains, with the robot to be shipped to China.
• Between private individuals it does not apply. Anyone buying a used robot dog from a private seller has only the Civil Code's warranty against defects: the defect must be reported within eight days of discovery and action brought within a year of delivery (art. 1495 of the Civil Code); defects declared in the listing cannot be contested.

This is also why the same Go2 Pro costs €2,580 at list price ($2,800) and €3,799 incl. VAT from Generation Robots: the difference buys VAT, two years of legal warranty, support in Europe and zero customs (we cover it in the import guide).

Who does repairs in Italy and in Europe

• Unitree (Go2, G1, R1). In Italy the only authorised centre is Eagle Robots (EagleProjects S.p.A., Perugia): hardware and software diagnostics, repairs with original parts, firmware updates, maintenance plans; prices are not published, you ask for a quote. In France there is Generation Robots. If you imported on your own, you deal with Unitree by e-mail and ship at your own expense. A reference for costs: in the USA the reseller RoboStore charges a $600 diagnostic deposit (about €552) for the Go2, deducted from the repair (17 Sep 2026). In Hong Kong the independent workshop Reboot Hub publishes a Go2 fault guide (joints, battery, calibration, LiDAR, updates) and gives 30 days' warranty on its work; prices depend on the case (29 May 2026).
• Dobot Rover X1. INFFNI has a European warehouse and dedicated support (service@inffnitech.com); out-of-warranty rates n/a.
• Booster K1. Goes through the EU resellers (Generation Robots, Reichelt); no repair price list; the RoboCup community repairs its own because the project is open.
• Petoi and MangDang. Do-it-yourself repair with listed spare parts (table below) and support by e-mail.
• KEYi Loona. Shipping to the KEYi centre at the customer's expense; repairs quoted at $100 to $300, 5–7 working days (17 Sep 2026).
• Xiaomi CyberDog 2. No service outside China.
• Boston Dynamics Spot. Only Boston Dynamics support and the Spot CARE plans, on quotation; self-repair is forbidden by the contract.

Spare parts: batteries, motors, feet, controllers

Dollar prices converted at 0.92; from the Chinese store add shipping, duty and VAT. The rule that emerges: where spare parts are on a public price list (Petoi, MangDang, partly Unitree and INFFNI) repairs are cheap and predictable; where they go through the service centre (Spot, G1, R1, K1, CyberDog 2, Loona) the cost is n/a and has to be budgeted as a risk. Repairing it yourself: what you can do and what voids the warranty

iFixit took a Go2 apart (28 Mar 2025) and rated it "pretty good" for a robot dog: a battery that slides out by hand from the side, with standard 18650 cells; each motor connected separately, almost everything labelled; spare feet in the box; a plastic locking collar on the legs that breaks instead of the metal mechanics. The limits: the LiDAR "buried deep inside the frame", no direct ordering of spare parts ("a contact form on their website") and a crack in the inner neck after the stair tests. On iFixit's Go2 page there is only the teardown, no step-by-step guide (18 Sep 2026).

What you can do without risk: replace the battery, feet, charger and remote control; clean the LiDAR window; redo calibration and updates from the app; on the Petoi and MangDang kits, change servos, board and battery following the documentation, because they were born to be assembled. What voids the warranty: opening the shell, replacing a motor, fitting non-original batteries, "unlocking" the firmware (Unitree, Boston Dynamics and Petoi say so in their terms). Reboot Hub puts joints, actuators and structural repairs among jobs for a specialist centre. Before handing a robot in for service, back it up: Unitree warns that "product maintenance may cause data loss".

Apps and firmware: updates, known problems, forums and support response times

The Unitree Go (Go2) and Unitree Explore (G1, R1) apps are free and OTA updates are included: no subscription. Store ratings: n/a (pages not readable on 18 Sep 2026). The most-cited case: in early October 2025, after a firmware update, the Go2 Pro app crashed as soon as it tried to connect; Unitree published the fix within about 24 hours and since then the OTA and STA-T remote-control services are disabled by default for security and have to be switched back on by hand in the device settings (MyBotShop forum; some users reported residual problems). On the Go2 insist on at least firmware V1.1.13 (24 Feb 2026), which closes two remote-code-execution vulnerabilities; the "UniPwn" Bluetooth flaw published on 20 September 2025 was not fixed as of the report date: use the robot on an isolated network. On the G1, firmware 1.5.5.0 of 1 September 2026 is declared to fix the Bluetooth flaws of August 2026 (data gathered on 17 Sep 2026).

Response times: the German reseller MyBotShop answered on the forum within two hours and chased Unitree; from Unitree directly, times are not published (n/a). If the robot causes damage: home liability cover, EU Directive 2024/2853 and Italian Law 132/2025

A 15 kg robot dog that hits a person or a car is, under the Italian Civil Code, a thing in someone's custody: the custodian (art. 2051 of the Civil Code) is liable, i.e. whoever is using it, barring unforeseeable events; if the damage stems from a defect, the manufacturer is liable. Two developments change the picture:

• Directive (EU) 2024/2853 of 23 October 2024 on liability for defective products: it expressly includes software and AI systems in the notion of product, introduces presumptions of defectiveness (art. 10: evidence not disclosed, breach of safety rules, "obvious malfunction" in foreseeable use) and applies to products placed on the market after 9 December 2026 (art. 2). It weighs on anyone importing on their own: without an economic operator established in the EU, the importer is the liable party.
• Law 132/2025 (23 September 2025) on artificial intelligence in Italy: the implementing decrees given preliminary approval on 10 June 2026 provide, for damage caused by AI systems, for the judge's power to order disclosure of technical documentation, a presumption of causation where the damage results from a breach of AI Act obligations, and direct action against the insurer on the model of motor liability insurance (art. 144 of Legislative Decree 209/2005). As of 18 September 2026 the decrees are not final: the parliamentary opinions are still pending.

Insurance. Home liability policies cover damage to third parties caused by the dwelling (a roof tile, a flowerpot, water leaks, trees), not necessarily by a walking robot: the Genertel page we consulted does not mention it. The cover to ask for is private-life liability (in Italy, "RC capofamiglia"): before buying, ask the insurer in writing whether a quadruped robot is included and with what limit of indemnity. Checklist before you buy (new or used)

1. Who you buy from: EU seller (2-year legal warranty, manufacturer's warranty, right of withdrawal) or import (manufacturer only, shipping to China at your expense).
2. How long the warranty lasts for that model (table above) and whether it passes on with a used sale: Unitree, Boston Dynamics, KEYi and Petoi tie it to the first buyer; between private individuals there is nothing to transfer.
3. Invoice with serial number matching the one on the label, and the EU declaration of conformity (Unitree does not publish it online: ask for it).
4. Battery: price of the replacement for that model and a 15–20 minute timed walking test.
5. Account: the seller unbinds the robot from the app in front of you and you pair it with your phone before paying; without that, it can only be unlocked through Unitree with the serial number and proof of purchase.
6. Firmware up to date (Go2: V1.1.13 or later; G1: 1.5.5.0).
7. Spare parts on a price list or only through service.
8. Signs of opening (damaged screws, misaligned shell): warranty void.
9. Insurance: written answer from your insurer.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the warranty on a Unitree Go2? 6 months on the Go2 Air, 12 months on the Pro, X and EDU (Unitree table, 18 Sep 2026). Buying from a professional seller in the EU adds the 24-month legal warranty.

Does the warranty pass to whoever buys the robot used? For Unitree, Boston Dynamics, KEYi and Petoi it is tied to the first buyer; between private individuals the legal warranty does not apply, only the Civil Code's warranty against defects (report within 8 days, action within a year). A dealer selling used must give at least a year.

How much does the replacement battery cost? Go2: $500 on the Unitree store, €600 incl. VAT in the EU. R1: $500 / €600. G1: $700 / €900. Booster K1 (5 Ah): $999. Rover X1: $299 or $499. Bittle X: €46.92. Mini Pupper 2: €9.20.

Can I open the robot to repair it? Battery, feet, charger and remote control, yes. Opening the shell, changing motors or fitting non-original batteries voids the Unitree, Boston Dynamics and Petoi warranty. The Petoi and MangDang kits are assembled and repaired following the documentation.

Who pays if the robot dog causes damage? As a rule the custodian (art. 2051 of the Civil Code); if the cause is a defect, the manufacturer, and from 9 December 2026 with the presumptions of Directive 2024/2853. Check with your insurer whether your private-life liability cover includes a robot.
